Ken McCort is the owner and operator of Four Paws animal behavior services in Doylestown, Ohio. It is located just south of Akron, but Ken sees clients all over the Ohio and the western Pennsylvania area. He works with people who have animals in need of training and behavior modification. Established in 1987, Ken has been working primarily with dogs, cats and birds with the general public. Most clients are acquired by referred from veterinarians or by other clients. Because he often works with more serious behavior concerns, all clients and their animals are seen on an individual basis; he does not offer group training classes.
Most behavior problems people have with their pets are based on relationship problems as well as miscommunication. That is why Ken works with his clients as well as their animals to effect behavioral changes. If other animals are needed to help with the treatment strategy, Ken and his wife Marilyn, a veterinarian, have a variety of animals of different of species he can use with the client’s animal. Most of Ken and Marilyn’s animals once had behavior concerns themselves when they were adopted. Because he lives in a multi-species household, Ken understands the challenges that come with living with multiple animals as well as the challenges that can arise from adding animals to an existing group.
Working with many species, both domesticated and wild, Ken uses training techniques that are scientifically sound, and not based on threats, coercion, intimidation and/or pain. Animals are trained to trust their handler and to defer to them in times of distress. Most of his clients have already been through some other training programs before they were referred to him.
Seminars Presentations and Workshops
As a lecturer and educator, Ken has given presentations all over the United States, Canada and Asia. He is a frequent speaker in Japan on a variety of subjects including training of dogs and birds as well as the implementing of animal assisted programs too.
Many prestigious groups, including the Midwest Veterinary Conference, Tufts University Animal Expo, the Delta Society’s national conferences, several dog breed clubs, veterinary technicians’ groups and the University of Akron have used Ken as a lecturer and educator and still do today. He is an engaging and lively speaker on a variety of animal related subjects.
